Asia & Europe 2000-2001
Pakistan - China - Tibet - Nepal - India - Pakistan - Iran - Turkey - Bulgaria - Romania - Hungary - Austria - Germany - Denmark
Started out with no fixed plan in Pakistan except for cycling the Karakoram Highway to Kasghar in China. An amazingly beautiful road cutting throgh the high mountains of the Karakorams.
Next I hitch hiked on trucks through Tibet to holy Mt. Kailash and Lhasa. A trip that cost me well over 20 kilos and a chinese criminal record, gave me the experience of walking with pilgrims around the holyest mountain in the world and cycling the beautiful back roads in the areas north of Lhasa.
Nepal
Back on the bike I went to Kathmandu. Trekked to Gokyo and Cho Oyu Base Camp, Everest Base Camp and Chukung Ri - a superb trek among the highest mountains in the world.Cycled to Pokhara, trekked to Annapurna Base Camp and continued west riding through the terrai and to the Indian border at Mahendranagar.
India
Rode the bike to Delhi and a couple of months travelling around India without the bike since I was not having fun on the crowded planes of Northern India. Went to Varanasi, the religous festival the Khumb Mela - the biggest gathering of people ever on the planet estimated at between 70 and 100 million people. Then all around Rajasthan before picking up my bike in Delhi and starting the ride towards Denmark.
Pakistan
Crossed Pakistan from east to west. Excellent ride. Very strange cycling through the tribal areas and deserts of Baluchisatn. Kalahnikovs everywhere and an absolute lack of women. Actually cycled 1500 kilometres without seeing a single woman....
Iran
Hit Iran where the spring storms made most days tough going. The wind came in from west...the exact direction I was going. Iran was the highlight when I comes to people. An amazing hospitality and the friendliest people I have met anywhere in the world.
Turkey & Europe
Went through Turkish Kurdistan and hit the Mediteranian Sea. I was shocked by the amount of tourist and hotels and raced along the cost without stoping much till I hit Istanbul. From Istanbul to Denmark I did not stop much eiter. 3600 kilometres in 20 days going through Turkey, Bulgaria, Rumania, Hungary, Austria, Germany and finally Denmark. Hit the street where I grew up after 13.000 kilometres on the bicycle.
